Some of the best career advice has always been to stay networked. One reason is so that if you were forced to find a job you would have access to people that could help you.
Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine, now offers that staying physically fit is equally as important to the unemployed:
Among those hurt or threatened by this Great Recession, unfit folks appear more vulnerable to layoffs, long bouts of unemployment and debilitating depression. No human resources manager would ever admit to this, of course. But one HR head who counsels unemployed men at our church said his best old advice was to stay networked. His best new advice is to stay networked and physically fit. Join a bike club, a spinning class or a masters swim team, and you’ll stay connected and fit.
It is said that the American winter holiday seasons begins at Thanksgiving and ends with Super Bowl Sunday. This can be a time of great joy. Statistically, it is also the time of weight gain, heart attacks, depression and suicide.
Staying fit through the winter takes concerted effort and discipline. But the payoffs for doing so are high. Think of it as protection for your heart, health and paycheck.
